Description/Job Summary

Under general direction of the Director of Facilities and Planning, the position will manage all functions that pertain to maintenance of grounds and key/lock control.  The position will establish and maintain work schedules for employee and preventive maintenance procedures for machinery.

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Maintains complete upkeep of all grounds, including parking lots, driveways, and sidewalks by collecting trash on the grounds and in parking lots, emptying trash containers; removing leaves and debris from all steps and sidewalks.
  • Establish and maintain flowerbeds, shrubbery and trees; including soil preparation, planting, fertilizing, thinning, mulching, feeding, watering, pruning, raking leaves and weeding as needed. Tree planting and removal as needed.
  • Maintenance of snow removal equipment, including attaching plow blades, salt spreaders, hoppers, and etc. on appropriate Grounds vehicles. Operate snow removal equipment to keep campus roadways, walkways, common areas and steps clear of ice and snow. Clean and repair snow removal equipment and vehicles as needed.
  • Maintain all fire hydrants, manholes, storm drains and storm-water management ponds; ensure safe and efficient operation in accordance will all applicable governmental codes.
  • Maintain inventory of appropriate campus signs. Install, repair and/or remove signage as requested.
  • Keeps abreast of new and improved processes for grounds maintenance and implements approved procedures;
  • Maintains/requisitions any equipment that is necessary for the operation of grounds and related purposes;
  • Sets up preventative maintenance schedule for all grounds mechanical equipment;
  • Ensures an orderly system of making keys, maintains inventory and related records, keeping in conjunction with Public Safety;
  • Attends all meetings of VP of Administration and Finance and the Director of Facilities and Planning;
  • Oversees outside vendor contractors;
  • Coordinates with Payroll, Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, Workforce Development and Continuing Education, Auxiliary Services, and other internal and external constituents;
  • Responds to incidents of vandalism and reports;
  • Supervises all classified and unclassified grounds personnel to include work release or student help;
  • Reviews work orders; determines work priority and makes appropriate personnel assignments; makes recommendations regarding work that falls outside the scope of the area and suggests alternatives for timely and appropriate completion;
  • May assist in budget projections, budget preparation, and departmental planning for area of responsibility;
  • Other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5 years’ experience working in grounds or related field.
  • Need to be able to use personal computer, calculator, office Phone, copier, Lawn Mowers, Trimmers, Edgers, Blowers, Gardening Hand Tools, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Snowplow, Bobcat, Toolcat Toro Tractor, John Deere Tractor and Salt Spreaders.
  • 2yrs of supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • AA Degree in a related field
  • 7 years’ experience working in grounds or a related field.
  • Need to be able to use personal computer, calculator, office Phone, copier, Lawn Mowers, Trimmers, Edgers, Blowers, Gardening Hand Tools, Power Tools, Hand Tools, Snowplow, Bobcat, Toolcat Toro Tractor, John Deere Tractor and Salt Spreaders.
